Before we start discussing the matter, it is important to know that if you feel the above, or the likeness of it, to be on the safe side, might be better to consult your physician. While it can be caused due to various reasons, if you experience these sensations for big portions of the day and nothing changes, consult your physician, same goes for head sensations, physician right away.
In the meanwhile, let’s point out some key things you would want to pay attention to. First, when did you start feeling this sensation? Was it after performing a certain activity, or did it just appear out of no where? Where exactly do you feel it? Are there any movements that reduce or worsen the feeling? Maybe it’s the same sensation regardless of what you do?These can narrow the causes and help treat your case.
The importance of when can help determine if the sensation is caused by trauma, overuse or overload. In case of a trauma, it could be disc related, depending on the forces involved and the location of the hit. Same goes for overload, a massive amount of force without needed preparation can also cause disc related sensations. In case of overuse I would not rule out the discs, but, in my experience, it is more likely to be musculoskeletal related. According to each case a better assessment can be carried out, all three can be both disc and musculoskeletal related, but it is important to build a correct profile for the sensation and know the details.
Where do you feel the sensation would narrow the locations that may have been effected. Both blood and nerves are going from the middle of the body in an outwards directions towards the fingers and toes. If we’d look at the arm, it is important to know if you feel it throughout the whole arm, the palm, which fingers or which specific area, because all those can direct to different places and rule out different injuries. There is a big difference between a sensation going on throughout the whole arm, or just through some of the fingers. Same goes for the legs, each part of the leg can point in a different directions. Specificity with the sensation would go a long way for the case.
Is it a static pain? If you feel the same sensation if you lay down, sit, stand, walk or do any type of activity, go to your physician. If you notice that doing a certain activity or movement triggers the sensations you feel, while other activities or movements reduce said sensations, it is important to remember which does what, as it provides a specific cause and can be used to find the root of the issue. These type of sensations are very common and are treatable, they are a symptom of a musculoskeletal issue and are nothing to worry about.
Should you sensations be musculoskeletal related, a therapist that works within the injury field would be able to locate and treat the cause. The root could be a specific tissue, or it could be a chain reaction of different tissues working with and against each other to compensate and balance the skeletal structure. According to the severity of the situation, the number of treatments needed may vary, and can take longer than first expected.
Should you have a disc issue, it is important to remember it is not the end of things, the disc would heal in the end, and the symptoms should still be treated, a different method could be used, depending on the cause.
